The plaque for the Cooperstown Tournament

1/14/2010 News Flash

The Saginaw ‘Old Golds’ will be staging the 1st Vintage Base Ball Tournament in the birth place of the Baseball Hall of Fame-Cooperstown, New York on May 15th & 16th 2010. The tournament will have on hand 20 New York school teachers in full Civil War attire. They will be there to explain Base Ball of the 1864 era, a game played with “no” gloves and a lot of courage, where broken fingers are more than a common occurrence. The format will feature 10 games, with everyone playing each other once. Six games will be contested on the famous Doubleday Stadium Field, where Major League Baseball plays a game every year. Four games will be played at the Farmer’s Museum’s open field. Richard “the Professor” Curry of the Old Golds, says, “the boys are looking forward to knocking a ball over the fence”. The event will be called ‘The John Clarkson Classic’. John’s storied Hall of Fame career started in earnest in Saginaw, Michigan in 1883 and 1884 where he won 21 and 32 games in the Northwestern League. Clarkson went on to win 328 M.L. games, once winning 53 and 49 games in a season. He twice pitched over 600 plus innings in a year. John died at the early age of 47. Elected into the Baseball HOF in 1963. Teams participating are class Vintage ball clubs. Brooklyn Atlantics are in their 14th season, going 41-11 in 2009. They beat the Ohio ‘Clodbusters three straight last year, 14-5, 12-4, and 13-8. Essex BBC out of Danvers, MA, has three teams in their organization and play an extensive schedule from April to October. New York ‘Gothams’ who play out of Central Park in New York City are in their 9th season. Mudville BBC from Holliston, MA, our competing in the teams 8th season. Saginaw “Old Golds’ are only in their 3rd full year. But they bring to the plate a 16-1-1 season from last year, to go along with the World Championship at Greenfield Village, Dearborn, MI, a two time State of Michigan Champion, and the Sylvania Cup. The Essex BBC will have a few of its players wearing Boston ‘Beaneaters’ uniforms to honor John Clarkson who played there during his career. In Saginaw, the ‘Old Golds’ team is painted on a 30 foot high 1875 era Barber Shop wall, where it also honors John Clarkson with his lifelike image.
